They are used for pressing contours, embossing structures, or bending profiles. Special presses are designed to perform only one task. Examples include the many hydraulic presses used in the recycling industry for scrap, cardboard, or green waste. They compress the bulk material to facilitate easier transport.

Hydraulic Press vs. Punching Machine

Presses and punching machines are often used synonymously in common parlance. However, this is incorrect and should be avoided for the following reason:

A punching machine is used to perforate an inserted sheet metal, i.e., to cut pieces out of it. This requires significantly higher compressive stress than for forming. Therefore, the guiding principle is that every punching machine can also serve as a press – but not vice versa. It is therefore important to clearly distinguish between these two types of machines.

Safe Operation of a Hydraulic Press

A hydraulic press operates slowly – but relentlessly. It is therefore essential to observe all necessary safety measures when working with this machine tool. Intervention in the working area must be prevented by protective measures. The press must be designed so that it does not enter a dangerous situation in the event of pressure loss. Furthermore, hydraulic presses must be easy to repair. These requirements necessitate extensive engineering for every new design, even for these traditional machines.

Maintenance of a Hydraulic Press

Hydraulic presses have the same maintenance requirements as any other hydraulic system. Seals, filters, and hydraulic fluid must be changed regularly. All technical components must also be inspected at defined intervals. These measures ensure their safety and significantly extend the service life of these machines.
