The Design of the Hydraulic Machine Vise

The vise consists of a fixed and a movable part. The hydraulics are housed in the movable part. Below the jaw side, there is a spindle with hydraulic amplification. When tightening the vise, the mechanical force range is initially engaged. If you continue turning after the noticeable resistance, the hydraulics are activated. This then presses the workpiece against the fixed side of the jaw with several tons of clamping force.

Clamping and Reinforcement of Fixation in the Hydraulic Machine Vise

The hydraulics not only ensure a particularly secure hold of the workpiece. They also absorb the vibrations that are unavoidable during milling operations. These vibrations are thus kept away from the mechanical screw spindle, preventing it from loosening.

By changing the clamping jaws, different workpieces and materials can be fixed on a hydraulic machine vise.

Defects in the Hydraulic Machine Vise

As a hydraulic component, the seals and bearings are the critical elements in these vises.

If a seal is defective, hydraulic fluid leaks out and the vise suddenly loses clamping force. For unknown or older vises, it is therefore important to check the tool for leaks before use. A defective bearing can be detected by a noticeable grinding sensation when tightening. Caution: In both cases, further use of the vise is strongly discouraged! The tool must be dismounted, disassembled, and repaired. Only then is it fully operational again.

In the event of a severe crash, the geometry of the vise can be damaged. This occurs when the plunge depth and feed rate of the cutter into the workpiece have been incorrectly calculated. A warped vise is irreparable and can only be completely replaced.

A hydraulic machine vise with an integrated pressure gauge makes clamping particularly convenient and provides simple and effective monitoring. Gradual pressure losses in particular can be quickly detected with this useful enhancement.
